Swimming Safety Precautions

CHILDREN AREN'T DROWN PROOF!

Under no circumstances should a child be left alone around water.  Adult supervision is mandatory.

ALWAYS SWIM WITH A BUDDY!

It only takes a brief moment in time to drown.  Even if you are a very skilled swimmer, you should swim in the presence of an adult.

NEVER USE FLOATATION DEVICES FOR RECREATIONAL SWIMMING.

Floatation devices, such as arm bands, belly rings and life jackets teach a vertical position in the water.  They develop a false sense of security.  If an unskilled swimmer commonly uses a floatation device and accidently falls into the water without the device, they will instinctly return to a vertical posture.  A child can only tread water for so long before they will sink.  The swim-float-swim technique is a proven, self-sufficient way to protect yourself and children around water.

PROVIDE BARRIERS TO POOL ENTRY.

All 4 sides of the pool should be surrounded by a fence or wall of at least 5 feet.

LEARN CPR!

SouthWest Aquatics offers CPR and First Aid Classes.  The classes are available the second Saturday of every month from 9:00am to 1:00pm.  The cost is $40 per person or $35 per person for a group of ten or more people.  If recertification is required, but not an entire class, schedule a private appointment for $30. Net proceeds benefit The Gift of Swimming.

Find out what to do at our CPR/ First Aid classes for Community and Workplace!  Come learn CPR techniques for Infant, Child, and Adults as well as how and when to use a defibrillator.  Discover how to assist an infant, child or adult who is choking.  Be trained on Basic First Aid for various situations.  Learn how to potentially identify a heart attack or stroke and how to assist the victim until the paramedics arrive.
