Under no circumstances should a child be left alone around water. Adult supervision is mandatory.
ALWAYS SWIM WITH A BUDDY!
It only takes a brief moment in time to drown. Even if you are a very skilled swimmer, you should swim in the presence of an adult.
NEVER USE FLOATATION DEVICES FOR RECREATIONAL SWIMMING.
Floatation devices, such as arm bands, belly rings and life jackets teach a vertical position in the water. They develop a false sense of security. If an unskilled swimmer commonly uses a floatation device and accidently falls into the water without the device, they will instinctly return to a vertical posture. A child can only tread water for so long before they will sink. The swim-float-swim technique is a proven, self-sufficient way to protect yourself and children around water.
PROVIDE BARRIERS TO POOL ENTRY.
All 4 sides of the pool should be surrounded by a fence or wall of at least 5 feet.
